What’s in Your Garden?

Dear Civic Pride,

Welcome to another edition of the Weekly Witterings, which I hope finds you and yours all in good health.

Here we are, already in May and the CPR community gardens are growing like mad. I’m trying not to look at the 5,000 daffodils which need deadheading on St Mary’s Way Embankment. Like so many things at the moment, they’ll just have to wait until the lockdown is eased.

There’s  a Government review of UK lockdown guidance scheduled for this Thursday, 7th May www.gov.uk and there’s also a statement by Boris Johnson on Sunday.   There seems to be a lot of media speculation about what will be said but please be assured that the CPR Executive Committee will review any changes which affect Civic Pride activities, and inform all our volunteers immediately if there are any changes.  Thank you to everyone for your patience and continued support over the past six weeks, it’s been a very strange and difficult time for us all.

Meanwhile, many of us have been extremely busy in our own gardens. Please have a look at the It’s Your Garden page on our website, which in addition to the flowers and wildlife, is showcasing the ingenuity (and possible lockdown fever) of CPR volunteers Mike and Moira Speechley.

As keen bikers they were involved with a charity ride in the Isle of Man – dressed as Evel Knievel!  Due to meet with 100 other Knievels, their challenge was 48 hours of riding the TT circuit followed by an island treasure hunt, aiming to raise money for Macmillan cancer support.  Coronavirus meant the event was cancelled, so naturally they decided to be Knievels’ at home, turning their garden into the Isle of Man road circuit and completing the challenge on the back lawn. They have been interviewed on local radio, and are in the next edition of the Free Press all of which is well deserved recognition of their spirit and good humour. If you would like to support Mike and Moira’s fundraising for Macmillan, please follow this link –  www.justgiving.com/manx2020

As ever, we are looking for more volunteers to send in photos [email protected] for It’s Your Garden, although I’m sorry to say that even though my June cycling trip has been cancelled, I won’t be building the Pyrenees in my back garden……but don’t let that stop you from making the most of your own outdoors.

Please keep sending us your ideas for Britain in Bloom 2021 and let us know how your sunflowers are growing. Find Yourself in a Garden will continue to publish a new feature on the website every week, giving lots of advice for gardeners and non-gardeners alike and there are some great pictures on our Facebook & Instagram feeds, so plenty to keep us all inspired.
