An Early Warning Witter

Dear Civic Pride,

The beginning of June, and it’s been a busy week for gardeners and litter pickers alike. Thank you to everyone for your time and effort, please continue to post your activities on our QT site and click on the ‘get email’ button to receive notifications….. contact us via the website if you’re not sure how to access Quick Topic and we’ll get you onboard.

With more people able to move around freely, there is certainly an increase in pavement and roadside litter since the lockdown eased and it’s keeping us busy across the valley. As ever, if you need any ‘rubbish’ advice or equipment then contact our Litter Officer, Roger Roundell [email protected] Kudos is due to all our Lone Ranger litter pickers, who also cleared the A682 bypass verges ahead of the Council mowing team.

It’s been a long hard (dry) week for our Gardeners too, but how fantastic to start working as small groups around the various gardens of Rossendale. As the lockdown eases it’s been great to catch up with fellow volunteers, and to share a common enthusiasm for the community gardens. Amazing what a small group of dedicated volunteers can achieve in just a couple of hours, so thanks to all who have joined in so far.

Our Garden’s Officer, Anne, has organised more sessions for the coming week:-
It’s the usual advice – each group is limited to 6 people who must observe social distancing. Please bring your own tools and refreshments.
If you want to help us zap the weeds, then book your place by emailing Anne at [email protected] or call 01706 551 123.

Tuesday 9th June – Central Reservation – 9-11am – Note an earlier start time, to fit in with traffic – weeding and tidying.

Wednesday 10th June – Gyratory – 10-12 noon – weeding and tidying.

Thursday 11th June – Haslingden Road Garden – 10-12 noon – weeding and tidying.

Since March the gardens have been left to fend for themselves, and while we fully appreciate the abundance of growth, the additional weeds do not get any votes of approval. Despite the necessary break in routine, as any gardener will tell you, start at one end and just keep going. With the joint efforts of our Secret Gardeners and mini groups, everything will soon be pruned, weeded, tidied and mulched back into top condition.

Early summer is such a wonderful time for horticulture, and so we are celebrating our volunteer’s own gardens on the CPR website www.civic-pride.org.uk. It’s Your Garden showcases just how green thumbed talent is literally thriving within Civic Pride.

Finally…… Please volunteer safely as Covid restrictions still very much apply to us all. Our thoughts are with those directly affected by the current pandemic.
As ever, Rossendale is incredibly grateful for all your efforts.
