A British Summer Time Witter

Dear Civic Pride,

Welcome to the slightly different Weekly Witterings.

And as we move forwards into British Summer Time the turmoil of the past week is beginning to settle into a new state of normality. Learning to live at a different pace, restricting our activities and refocusing priorities.

While Civic Pride has temporarily stopped outdoor activities in the Valley, spare a thought for the essential key workers who are keeping vital services operational during the most challenging of times. We will, of course, do what we can to support them, whether that means standing on our doorstep clapping for the NHS every Thursday at 8pm, or linking in with other local groups to share information but most importantly by following government guidelines.

The Coronavirus outbreak has presented us all with changing circumstances, if you, or someone you know needs additional support or advice then there are helpful contact details at the end of this letter.

With our Community Gardens and Britain in Bloom plans firmly on hold, a huge thank you to everyone for your positivity and forward thinking. We will be able to let the gardens rest in the arms of Mother Nature, safe in the knowledge that once social distancing is over, our volunteers will be back with determination to “blitz” those weeds and collect the litter.

Interestingly, we had a call from a member of the public who was out on her lonely walk this morning but rang to say the embankment garden ‘… was the highlight of my day’. She recognises what a difference CPR has made but as Chris Blomerley says, that’s what we do’!

In the meantime, with so much to keep us busy in our own gardens, we have introduced a new Gardening section (Find Yourself in a Garden) to our website with seasonal notes and advice. Let me know what you think, and if you have any horticultural questions then please contact me directly [email protected] or via the CPR website, and I’ll do my best to answer.

Our Chair, Roger Grimshaw, was so inspired he rushed online to buy a new lawn mower (he’s wondering what to do with it now)!

Finally, to all our volunteers, please take care and stay well.

Helen Thomas
Vice Chair CPR
