Trickett’s Memorial Garden

Civic Pride’s plans to regenerate the historic Trickett’s Memorial Ground in Waterfoot have come a step closer.  We were recently awarded £4500 by Postcode Local Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The land for the memorial ground on Burnley Road East, was purchased in 1921 with funds raised by the workforce, management and choral society of Sir HW Trickett Ltd, in memory of the 44 male workers who lost their lives in the First World War.

A grand opening took place a year later but sadly with the exception of the War Memorial itself, they fell into disrepair over the years, overgrown, uncared for and unloved until Liz Hoskin, a local resident and Civic Pride volunteer decided to do something about it.  With her friend Charlotte Hocking, they set about removing litter, cutting back hedges and undergrowth, weeding and clearing paths.

With limited funding but later with some help from other volunteers and Rossendale Borough Council, a few plants were brought in, the bus shelter repainted, bulbs planted and the ground prepared for Spring.

‘We plan to install seating, hanging baskets, planters, new shrubs, herbs and perennials to make the gardens a colourful and pleasant place in which to walk and relax’ explained Liz.

With fourteen gardens under the care of Civic Pride in Rawtenstall, ‘It’s further testament to the dedication and hard work of our volunteers’ said Vice Chair Roger Grimshaw ‘not only gardening and litter picking but in seeking out and obtaining the funding which is vital to our future success.’

‘People playing the Postcode Lottery have enabled this grant’ he continued ‘which will ultimately bring great benefits to our local community’.
