Thirteen hardy Civic Pride volunteers braved the freezing conditions last Thursday morning to clear Rawtenstall’s streets of unsightly litter. Meeting behind the market we spread out onto major roads in all directions, collecting a total of 45 bags or in excess of 13,000 items ranging from cigarette ends, cans, crisp packets, hub caps, empty packets of cat food and even a bicycle! ‘It was a great turnout’ said Ben Parkin, Litter Manager ‘proof yet again of the unselfish attitude of our members to give up their time so soon after Christmas on behalf of the community’.
Many of them were old stalwarts of the team but there was one new recruit who had been considering joining for a long time, she was excited to find that she can go out at any time on her own to help keep the area clear; she joined on the spot. As for the old hand who arrived as we were packing up, having not noted the time, the less said the better! It would be unfair to mention that she also missed out on the hot drinks generously supplied by McDonalds!
Having made such a difference to the area already, Civic Pride urgently need volunteers and sponsors across the valley. Please call 07955 110199 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help, even in a small way.
